Implementing Modulation Functions in Microwave Frequency Synthesizers

چکیده

The main function of a frequency synthesizer is to deliver a stable and clean signal. However, many applications require not only a fixed frequency signal but also various modulation functions ranging from simple pulse, amplitude, frequency and phase modulation to complex digital modulation formats. Although modulators are usually realized as external devices, they can also be incorporated into a frequency synthesizer core. Inside any synthesizer there are many circuits that can carry multiple functions and be reused to increase the functionality without a significant increase in cost. This results in a more cost efficient and versatile design. The most commonly used modulation schemes are briefly reviewed in this article. Further details on modulation theory and implementation techniques can be found in [1-7].

Control Interfaces for RF and Microwave Frequency Synthesizers

Frequency synthesizers come in a variety of forms ranging from tiny PLL chips and moderate-size modules to bench-top signal generators [1-5]. Single-chip synthesizers are available in a die form or as surface-mount integrated circuits. They include key elements (such as RF and reference dividers, phase detector, lock indicator, etc.) required to build a simple single-loop PLL synthesizer. More ...

Building a Microwave Frequency Synthesizer — Part 5 : Advanced Techniques

T his is the final article in a five-part series on microwave frequency synthesizers. It concludes with a review of advanced synthesizer solutions. Although synthesizers can be found in virtually any microwave system, test and measurement (T&M) is probably the most challenging application that calls for advanced synthesizer techniques. This final article addresses some specific T&M requirements...

Low-noise, high resolution microwave synthesis for atomic frequency standards

The performance of newer generations of ultra high stability atomic frequency standards based on laser cooled atoms and ions appears to be limited by the local oscillator and the microwave synthesis chain. To improve this performance, the design considerations of microwave synthesizers for Cs hyperfine clock transition at 9.192 GHz that emphasize high resolution, low phase modulation (PM) and a...

The Basic Principle of Frequency Synthesis

AS a result of the steadily increasing congestion in communication bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, efforts are being made to utilize new ranges, particularly microwave and optical frequencies, and to better exploit existing frequency allocations. The latter tasks have led to improvements in communication techniques (SSB modulation, multiplexing, digital systems, spread spectrum applicati...

Direct Digital Signal Generation for Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Radar Systems

Direct digital synthesizers provide broadband and flexible signal generation. Hence, they are well suited for radar applications. In this paper, we consider the EUVIS DS872 device that has a bandwidth of 3GHz and an internal memory. The goal of this work is to evaluate its usability in frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems. An experimental test environment has been created, w...
